Tuesday, June 19 through Sunday, June 24
Unity Spiritual Center of Panama City is excited and honored to be hosting the Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery and their Sacred Art Tour. Embracing the need to bring teachings that create the possibility of global peace, non-violent conflict resolution, compassion and wisdom, the monks and the work they do are endorsed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The Buddhist Monks will share their rare, ancient, culturally rich and diverse Tibetan art, customs and spiritual wisdom with the citizens of Panama City.
The monks begin their five day Sacred Art of the Sand Mandala with an opening ceremony on Tuesday, June 19th at Unity Spiritual Center beginning at 10 am with the closing ceremony taking place on Sunday, June 24th at 1 pm. The public is invited to visit Unity Spiritual Center daily from 10 am to 7 pm to see the beautiful designs of the sand mandala emerge.
Sand paintings, or mandalas, are an ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism. There are many different mandalas, each with different lessons to teach and blessings to confer.
Throughout the week the Monks will also offer various workshops: meditation & chanting, stone painting and even a dinner event with the monks cooking a cultural meal.
The week will culminate on Sunday, June 24 at 11 am as the Monks with share Sunday Service with Rev. Joanne Burns, and then at 1 pm will be the closing ceremony of the Sand Mandala with the sand being emptied into the Downtown Panama City bay.
Before they leave Panama City, the Monks will receive a donation to support their ability to educate, feed, house and care for close to 2,000 monks in a Tibetan Refugee camp in South India.
Admission prices for all events will be posted soon.
